Étudiant atypique et ombrageux à l'université de Princeton, brillant, il étonne son professeur en lui proposant une théorie économique révolutionnaire. Ceci lui ouvrira les portes du prestigieux Massachussetts Institute of Technology (où il rencontrera sa future épouse) puis du Pentagone. Diagnostiqué schizophrène grave, il fait la rencontre d'un mystérieux agent des services secrets qui va l'entraîner dans une incroyable aventure. Quand, bien des années plus tard, il sort de sa maladie, il se voit attribuer le prix Nobel d'économie.
