Depuis le milieu des années 80, il s'est imposé comme une figure majeure du cinéma moderne. Ses polars réalisés à Hong Kong, tels "The Killer", ou "A toute épreuve" lui ont permi d'accéder une renommée internationale qui s'est confirmée à Hollywood grâce à "Volte face" ou "Mission impossible 2".
