John Woo est l'un des rares cinéastes en activité dont l'œuvre fait l'objet d'un véritable phénomène de culte, tant auprès des spectateurs que des autres réalisateurs. Depuis le milieu des années 80, il s'est imposé comme une figure majeure du cinéma moderne. Ses polars réalisés à Hong Kong, tels "The Killer", ou "A toute épreuve" lui ont permi d'accéder une renommée internationale qui s'est confirmée à Hollywood grâce à "Volte face" ou "Mission impossible 2".
