Book Presentation:
Les Sept Samouraïs (1954) nous montre une société à la veille d’une irrévocable transformation. Le célèbre film d’Akira Kurosawa, que beaucoup considèrent comme l’un des chef-d’œuvres du cinéma japonais, est une saga qui évoque le bouleversement culturel consécutif à l’effondrement du militarisme japonais au seizième siècle, faisant également écho aux métamorphoses culturelles provoquées par l’occupation américaine.
Les Sept Samouraïs est peut-être le meilleur des films d’action, chef-d’œuvre technique inégalé dans sa représentation du mouvement et de la violence. Mais derrière le bruit et la fureur, on perçoit le chant du cygne d’une noblesse déchue, « l’hymne funèbre de l’âme du Japon, qui ne connaîtra plus jamais la même force » selon Joan Mellen.
Mellen replace Les Sept Samouraïs dans son contexte, dans le cinéma japonais et dans la carrière de Kurosawa. Elle remonte jusqu’à l’histoire médiévale pour découvrir les racines du film, et, surtout, elle examine le langage visuel extraordinaire qu’utilise le réalisateur pour créer sa saga élégiaque.
