Malgré cette période sombre drapée d'imaginaire, le second volet des « Carnets d'un cinéphile » retrace l'histoire du cinéma français du Front populaire à la libération de Paris. La censure et la propagande en zone occupée s'attaquaient aux références anglo-saxonnes et s'appliquaient aux acteurs et réalisateurs juifs et communistes. Cependant, la période de l'occupation fut un second souffle pour le cinéma français qui marqua la rupture avec l'aspect artisanal que révélait ce secteur d'activité avant-guerre. C'est le cinéma américain qui va exalter et mythifier la résistance française, réelle ou supposée, et développer une critique très sévère de la collaboration avec l'ennemi allemand.
