Beau comme un ange, et fascinant sans rien faire pour l'être, Marcello Mastroianni fut, dès sa première apparition, le latin lover par excellence. Iconique et mélancolique, blagueur et distant, il fut aussi convaincant en bellâtre impuissant, en prêtre tenté par la chair, en homosexuel antifasciste qu'en macho marié, divorcé ou bigame… Traduisant les états d'âme de Fellini, de Visconti, d'Antonioni, Risi ou Scola, il proposa au fil du temps une flamboyante comédie humaine. Cet homme pudique et modeste a donné la réplique à de sublimes actrices, offrant à son public des dizaines de films cultes et d'inoubliables souvenirs. Mais derrière le masque, qui était Marcello ? Un mari aimant, un séducteur compulsif, un père comblé par ses deux filles… L'une était italienne (Barbara), l'autre française (Chiara). Pour les rejoindre, il passait d'un pays à l'autre. Cette biographie est donc une histoire italienne avec vue sur la France. En enquêtant à Rome, en fouillant à Paris, Elizabeth Gouslan cisèle, entre ombre et lumière, le portrait d'un être attachant qui fut aussi l'un des plus grands acteurs de notre époque.
