D'abord comédien, Éric Rondepierre se dirige ensuite via la peinture vers un travail photographique lié au cinéma. Depuis 2002, l'œuvre s'est diversifiée : l'artiste utilise ses propres images qu'il recompose avec ses textes, ses dessins ou encore avec des images de cinéma qu'il s'approprie. Images secondes reprend l'ensemble des séries que l'artiste a réalisées depuis plus de vingt ans et est accompagné d'essais inédits de Jacques Rancière, Catherine Millet et Quentin Bajac. Cette monographie vient combler un manque éditorial : en effet, l'artiste n'a pas publié de monographie importante depuis près de dix ans.
