Max Linder. Avant d'être le nom d'un cinéma sur les grands boulevards parisiens, il est celui d'un artiste majeur du début du XXe siècle. Comédien, metteur en scène, cinéaste, il est l'auteur de plus de cinq cents films dont la plupart ont disparu, détruits par la malveillance et l'oubli. Car cet homme reconnu de son vivant comme la plus grande star du cinéma muet, côtoyant et inspirant Chaplin aux Etats-Unis, était aussi un homme tourmenté, profondément instable, disparu précocement et tragiquement un matin de Toussaint 1925 emportant sa femme avec lui. C'est par la voix de Max Linder lui-même que nous est livré le récit rétrospectif de sa trajectoire aussi fulgurante que brillante, en forme d'adresse à sa fille bien trop brièvement connue.
