Cet ouvrage présente les difficultés liées à la construction et à l'évolution de l'industrie cinématographique en Irlande. La production nationale est tout d'abord semée d'échecs, dus souvent au contexte historique et social. Puis, dans les années 70, émerge un cinéma radicalement opposé aux productions antérieures. La quantité de films produits s'accroît et certaines œuvres connaissent un succès international. Ce foisonnement permet d'identifier les thèmes récurrents, de réfléchir sur les problèmes rencontrés par le cinéma irlandais et sur les chances qui lui sont offertes.
