Il a publié son premier poème à 8 ans, été condamné aux travaux forcés à 15, a dormi avec des cochons, volé des sèche-cheveux, été arrêté pour possession de stupéfiants. Il a giflé Otto Preminger, chanté avec Elvis Presley, joué dans plus de 130 films et enregistré une poignée de disques dont au moins un sublime. Éternel vagabond qui se considérait toujours entre deux trains, Robert Mitchum a posé ses valises à Hollywood au beau milieu des années 1930, acceptant sans trop y croire ce métier d'acteur auquel il attachait si peu d'importance, au point d'aller parfois pêcher entre les prises. Comme si, malgré le bruit, la gloire et l'agitation, il n'avait jamais été vraiment là.
