Ulysse, Europe, Orphée et Eurydice figurent parmi les personnages mythiques dont les aventures ont été illustrées de tout temps par la peinture, la céramique, la littérature et, depuis plus d'un siècle, le cinéma. Agnès Varda, Alain Resnais, Christophe Honoré et Jean-Jacques Annaud ont participé à la transmission et à la réécriture de ces mythes grecs, chacun à sa façon. Ainsi Ulysse (1982) permet à Agnès Varda de combiner un commentaire autobiographique sur une photographie prise en 1954 à une perspective féministe et politique sur son contexte, en écho aux travaux de Roland Barthes et Jacques Rancière sur la photographie et aux définitions du film d'essai à partir d'Adorno.
