Heat, Révélations, Ali, Collateral, Miami Vice, ou encore Public Enemies ont rebattu les cartes du cinéma américain au point de faire de Mann l'un des cinéastes les plus importants de ces trente dernières années.Quelques plans suffisent pour reconnaître son style : une prédilection pour les univers urbains et cristallins, et en particulier Los Angeles, dont il a su renouveler l'image ; un goût pour les hommes solitaires et concentrés ; une manière contemplative de filmer qui allie fascination et mélancolie. Né en 1943 à Chicago, Michael Mann réalise son premier film en 1981 (Le Solitaire). Il révolutionne l'écriture télévisuelle avec la série Deux flics à Miami et, en 1995, signe avec Heat le 2001 du polar. Comment un cinéaste de la génération du Nouvel Hollywood est-il parvenu à trouver ses marques au sein d'une décennie, les années 1980, qui en constituait la négation ?
