Yoshikata Yoda fut le scénariste de tous les grands films de Kenji Mizoguchi: Les Contes de la lune vague après la pluie, L'Intendant Sansho, Les Amants crucifiés, Le Héros sacrilège, La Rue de la honte, et bien d'autres. A partir de 1948, et pendant près de vingt ans, il devient le compagnon de route du cinéaste, et bientôt son ami. Son ouvrage est un recueil de souvenirs personnels, de documents précieux et de réflexions sur Mizoguchi, qui composent une sorte de documentaire sur l'homme et son art: ses rêves, ses joies, ses peines, sa vision du monde, son style, sa méthode de travail, ses rapports avec ses collaborateurs, sa vie...
