Le thème de la décadence est souvent présenté comme central dans l'œuvre cinématographique de Visconti. Vincent Petitet prend le contre-pied de cette idée - qui est peut-être bien une idée reçue - préférant insister sur l'effervescence des pulsions et la sensualité des épidermes. Il brosse ainsi le portrait de Visconti en infatigable chasseur qui observe, traque, tranche et prélève ce qui satisfait ses visions d'artiste. Ses acteurs n'en ressortent pas indemnes, dressés au génie ou condamnés à la disparition.
