Acteur, chanteur, danseur, chorégraphe, librettiste, metteur en scène, Eugene Curran « Gene » Kelly (1912-1996) est l’auteur de quelques-unes des plus belles comédies musicales de l’histoire du cinéma. Qu’il ait bénéficié de la collaboration de Vincente Minnelli ou de Stanley Donen ne diminue en rien l’unité de son œuvre. Son exigence, son obstination, sa fantaisie auront bouleversé un genre cinématographique auquel il a contribué plus qu’aucun autre à donner sa forme classique. Danseur inventif et brillant, il ne s’est pas contenté de devenir une vedette hollywoodienne. Il a pris tous les risques pour réaliser son projet : manifester l’universalité de la danse.
