L'histoire de cet homme - dont les amis s'appellent Douglas Fairbanks et Mary Pickford, Caruso, George Bernard Shaw, Churchill, Gandhi, Einstein, Cocteau et Picasso -, c'est en même temps celle du cinéma américain : la naissance et le développement de Hollywood depuis l'époque des grandes stars jusqu'aux super-productions d'aujourd'hui. C'est aussi l'histoire d'un homme seul malgré la célébrité, d'un homme qui ne cache rien des vicissitudes de sa vie sentimentale jusqu'à l'épanouissement de son bonheur familial avec Oona et leurs huit enfants. Paru en 1964, Histoire de ma vie a connu un grand succès. Sa réédition s'imposait au moment où sort le film Chaplin de Richard Attenborough, avec Robert Downey dans le rôle de Chaplin, un film tiré en grande partie de son autobiographie : celle d'un homme exceptionnel, l'un des dix ou douze à avoir le plus fortement marqué leur époque.
