Willy Loman, la soixantaine, marié et père de deux enfants adultes, se remémore les étapes de sa vie de commis voyageur. Il s'est toujours donné avec passion à son métier mais, au seuil de la vieillesse, il constate qu'il n'est plus dans le coup. Il va alors préférer disparaître plutôt que de perdre la dignité qu'il a su préserver jusque-là. Arthur Miller a été le témoin du drame qu'il décrit. Il s'est en effet inspiré des représentants qui travaillaient dans la fabrique de manteaux de son père. Au-delà de son talent, c'est cet accent de vérité qui donne à la pièce sa dimension universelle.
