Dans son carnet secret, la comtesse Livia se souvient. De sa rencontre à Venise, alors qu'elle était en voyage de noces, avec Remigio et de la passion que lui inspira ce beau lieutenant. Froidement, elle raconte aussi comment, par jalousie et par souci de vengeance, elle mena à sa perte son amant après lui avoir donné argent et bijoux. Concis et cruel dans sa manière de camper ses personnages (sur une vision romantique de l'amour, le cynisme de la comtesse en dit long), précis dans son évocation du contexte historique (la guerre entre l'Italie et l'Autriche), Camillo Boito tire de cette trame mélodramatique un joyau romanesque. Visconti ne s'y est pas trompé, qui prêta de manière inoubliable les traits d'Alida Valli et de Farley Granger à la comtesse et à son lieutenant dans son Senso de 1953.
