De ce livre inoubliable, à la grandeur toute d'épopée et d'horreur, le sujet est simple : dans une partie de l'île de Bornéo occupée par les Japonais, deux Blancs, un Anglais et un Australien, sont parachutés avec mission d'organiser la résistance locale, celle des indigènes muruts. Ils rencontrent un Blanc : Learoyd, Irlandais déserteur, d'immenses yeux gris, intraitables... Les Muruts en ont fait leur roi. Learoyd a accepté de mettre son peuple au service des deux hommes et l'Adieu au Roi, dès lors, est l'histoire de l'extermination des Japonais de Bornéo. L'histoire d'une agonie collective.
About the Author:
Pierre Schoendoerffer, de l'Institut, disparu le 14 mars 2012. Ecrivain, metteur en scène, documentariste. On retiendra notamment Le Crabe-Tambour (Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française en 1976). L'Adieu au roi a reçu le prix Interallié en 1969.
