Book Presentation:
La municipalité d'une petite ville américaine offre au chef de la police un diplôme d'honneur et un voyage autour du monde. Il part avec sa femme. En Ecosse il est mis en prison pour avoir tué un vieux militant syndicaliste au cours d'une rixe dans un pub ; il parvient à s'évader avec le secours de certaines complicités et rentre dans le Middle West. Mais là tout a changé : sa femme divorce, épouse le nouveau chef de la police, la municipalité corrompue a partie liée avec les rackets locaux. Le héros en conclut que les bons sont les mauvais, et réciproquement, avant d'accomplir une absurde action d'éclat. Ustinov raconte cette extravagante odyssée avec un humour sarcastique. Son récit est d'une logique implacable et d'une grande loufoquerie.
