En des temps de peste, alors que la communauté de l'Évêché de Mâcon est frappée par la stérilité, un bel enfant en bonne santé, va naître. Sa sœur et l'Église y voient matière à profit. En apportant la prospérité, l'Enfant pris pour un saint, devient objet de cupidité et de convoitises délirantes... jusqu'au sacrifice.
L'histoire de The Baby of Mâcon se passe sur la scène d'un théâtre de province à l'apogée de la Contre-Réforme devant un public qui goûte le mélodrame religieux. Très vite, on ne sait si l'on a affaire à une mise en scène ou au récit de faits authentiques. On ne saurait non plus décider si les événements se déroulent au théâtre ou à l'église. Pour finir, on ne saura même plus distinguer les acteurs des spectateurs.
