Mais bien avant de porter colts et stetson, Duke fut Marion Morrison, un gamin de l’Iowa qui rêvait d’être footballeur et se retrouva promu jeune premier de série B. Seul un homme de la trempe de John Ford, père de substitution tyrannique, pouvait le rhabiller en super-héros à éperons. Cowboy presque malgré lui, John Wayne n’a jamais pris les armes ailleurs que sur grand écran. Il s’est rêvé en pilote intrépide comme en Gengis Khan, a rebâti le Fort Alamo et défié les communistes de Hollywood. Une chevauchée fantastique entachée par un conservatisme forcené dans un monde irrémédiablement appelé à disparaître.
