henri verneuil est le champion incontesté du cinéma populaire, aimé du public. la vache et le prisonnier, un singe en hiver, mélodie en sous-sol, cent mille dollars au soleil, le clan des siciliens… des films cultes régulièrement diffusés à la télévision et dans les cinémathèques. trente-quatre longs métrages interprétés par les plus grands acteurs (fernandel, jean gabin, jean-paul belmondo, alain delon, henry fonda, patrick dewaere…) à travers une longue carrière qui démontrent un formidable talent de conteur hérité d'une tradition familiale. pourtant à être si populaire, un certain nombre de cinéastes et de critiques se sont acharnés sur henri verneuil lui reprochant de ne réaliser que des films commerciaux. il en a souffert mais il n'a rien changé. perfectionniste, technicien exigeant ne laissant rien au hasard, aimant raconter des histoires, il n'a eu toute sa vie qu'un seul objectif en mettant en scène ses films : divertir le public !
