Certains arrivent à Hollywood pour entrer dans un rêve. Lui a grandi là-bas, auprès de hippies menant leur existence comme un songe ésotérique, virant parfois au cauchemar. Avec cette famille qui a fait de lui un enfant acteur des années 80, c’est à la vie, à la mort. Celle de son frère River a failli le pousser à disparaître. Mais le nouveau millénaire l’a réinventé en tragédien aux yeux gorgés d’énigmes. De Gladiator aux torrents de noirceur du cinéma de James Gray, et jusqu’au rire sanglant du Joker, il a traîné une angoisse si vive qu’elle est devenue sa muse. Elle lui dicte ses actions : ricaner, pleurer, grogner, grossir, maigrir, mourir, pour mieux ressusciter, sous un visage qui n’est peut-être qu’un masque. Peu importe : chacun y lit ses propres douleurs, si bien que Joaquin Phoenix est devenu l’éternel frère de tous les inquiets.
