Mars 2004, le réalisateur portugais Pedro Costa est invité à donner une conférence sur la réalisation et le cinéma devant les étudiants de la Tokyo Film School au Japon. Pendant 3 jours, il livre en français son histoire du cinéma, mêlant les Frères Lumière, Griffith, Tourneur et Bresson, en passant par les Straub, et donne également ses conseils aux futurs cinéastes à partir de ses propres films. Il s'agit à ce jour de la seule fois où il se sera prêté à cet exercice. Précédemment publiée au Japon dans une version tronquée en anglais et japonais, nous la publions dans une forme revue, corrigée et augmentée par Pedro Costa lui-même.
