" Ces quelques lignes douces-amères, tirées du Violent, sont comme l'épitaphe de l'idylle vouée à l'échec qui est au centre de ce puissant drame hollywoodien. Humphrey Bogart, dans l'un de ses plus remarquables rôles, incarne un scénariste bagarreur et cynique qui tombe sous le charme de la séduisante Laurel (Gloria Grahame). Mais Dix connaît des accès de violence et même si, en définitive, il est lavé du soupçon de meurtre, son histoire d'amour n'y survivra pas. Dans son essai, d'une grande finesse et très documenté, Dana Polan s'interroge notamment sur les dimensions autobiographiques du film (le mariage de Nicholas Ray et Gloria Grahame commençait à se fissurer) et sur le genre auquel il est censé appartenir : Le Violent est-il un film noir ? une comédie romantique ? C'est en tout cas, affirme l'auteur, " un film étrange ".
