"Je n'étais qu'une petite ouvreuse habitant Greenwich Village, à l'époque où Howard Hawks me proposa un bout d'essai qui me propulsa à Hollywood, et écrivit le premier chapitre de mon conte de fées. Avec mon premier film survint mon premier amour, l'idylle la plus enivrante qu'on puisse imaginer. Les vingt-quatre ans qui nous séparaient, Bogie et moi, ne se voient pas sur les photos du Port de l'angoisse et du Grand Sommeil : nous étions faits l'un pour l'autre. Depuis, ma carrière cinématographique a connu des hauts - et pas mal de bas, auxquels j'ai résisté, comme aux turbulences de ma vie. Il y eut la longue maladie de Bogie, les nuits sombres qui suivirent sa disparition, un second mariage malheureusement brisé par l'alcool et l'adversité. Rien n'est parfait, mais j'ai mes trois enfants, mes amis, mes chiens, mes livres, ma musique, mes voyages, et du travail qui m'attend encore... J'ai de la chance. "
