Cet ouvrage confronte deux approches d'une des grandes stars masculines du cinéma français : Jean Gabin. La première, proposée par Claude Gauteur, est un dossier assemblant des documents et des témoignages de première main sur la carrière de l'auteur, d'où émergent deux figures antagonistes : Gabin y apparaît tour à tour comme un héros emblématique de l'époque du Front populaire, et un patriarche passéiste, contemporain de la Ve République. La seconde, développée par Ginette Vincendeau, est une analyse fondée sur les théories féministes, les études anglo-saxonnes et les méthodes les plus actuelles de l'anthropologie culturelle, où apparaît, inversement, le pouvoir réconciliateur du mythe à travers trois aspects : la star, le Français et l'homme.

Claude Gauteur a réuni et présenté des œuvres de jean Renoir, Jean Cocteau et Sacha Guitry, et publié des essais sur Jean Renoir, Georges Simenon et Michel Simon. Ginette Vincendeau enseigne l'histoire et la théorie du cinéma, à King's College, à Londres. Elle a notamment publié Stars and Stardom in French Cinema, et Jean-Pierre Melville : An American in Paris.
