Tom Cruise (né en 1962), très tôt repéré par Francis Ford Coppola (Outsiders, 1983), acquiert une véritable notoriété internationale grâce à Top Gun de Tony Scott au milieu des années 1980. Dès lors, celui qui deviendra l’un des acteurs les plus cotés d’Hollywood oriente sa carrière vers de grands films à succès, avec une prédilection pour l’action et la science-fiction, tels que Collatéral (2004) de Michael Mann, La Guerre des mondes (2005) de Steven Spielberg ou encore la série des Mission : Impossible (1996, 2000, 2006, 2011) et Oblivion (2013) de Joseph Kosinski. Cruise a reçu de nombreuses récompenses pour son travail, notamment aux oscars, Golden Globes et Saturn Awards.
