En comparant trois œuvres décisives Nuit et Brouillard (1955), Shoah (1985) et La liste de Schindler (1993), il analyse les trois grandes phases de la perception historique qui se sont succédé depuis 1945: depuis la volonté d'oubli, le mélange de mise à distance et de compassion jusqu'aux problèmes d'interprétation et la surenchère polémique et médiatique d'aujourd'hui.
