En 1985, la sortie de Shoah, le film de Claude Lanzmann, est un choc cinématographique et historique. En 9 heures et demie d'entretiens avec des témoins ou des acteurs survivants filmés en Pologne et en Israël, le cinéaste parvient à dire toute l'horreur de l'Holocauste sans avoir recours aux images d'archives, sans montrer ni corps décharnés ni cadavres. Dans Au sujet de Shoah, seize personnalités philosophes, historiens, réalisateurs, écrivains livrent leur regard sur le film. De la méditation personnelle au commentaire technique et au questionnement implacable, chacun est à la fois spectateur et analyste de ce film d'exception, qui apporte une réponse unique à la question de « l'art après Auschwitz ». En fin d'ouvrage, la transcription de quelques interviews de Claude Lanzmann éclaire la démarche du réalisateur.
La première édition d'Au sujet de Shoah a été publiée en 1990 dans la collection « L'Extrême contemporain », dirigée par Michel Deguy.
