Friedrich-Wilhelm Murnau (1888 - 1931), cinéaste allemand, est l'un des maîtres du cinéma muet. Imprégné par l'« expressionnisme », il est l'auteur, entre autres, de « Nosferatu le vampire ». Ce petit livre est la réédition d'un ouvrage publié en 1965 dans une collection dirigée par par Jean Mitry aux « Éditions Universitaires » et qui était devenu introuvable. Murnau s'est affirmé, au cours de sa brève carrière, comme l'un des plus grands poètes de l'écran.
