Eisner, une des plus proches collaboratrices d'Henri Langlois, analyse les œuvres dans une perspective historique. Ernst Lubitsch, Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau et Max Reinhardt sont les principaux personnages de cette période capitale de l'histoire du cinéma, dont Lotte Eisner fut le témoin privilégié. Son livre est devenu un classique.
