Emir Kusturica, cinéaste cosmopolite et novateur, impose avec Underground, une des rares "secondes Palmes d’or". Il y a dix ans, le festival de Cannes décernait sa plus haute récompense à Papa est en voyage d’affaire, à un jeune cinéaste bosniaque. Depuis, Le Temps des gitans et Arizona Dream ont rassemblé autour de ses films, cinéphiles et grand public. Serge Grünberg, écrivain et journaliste, proche de l’univers du cinéaste, lui a proposé d’engager le dialogue sur le film en train de se faire, sa genèse, la préparation, le tournage, mais aussi sur son contenu et la polyphonie des sensations transmises, et plus largement sur l’ensemble de son itinéraire.
Underground, c’est la nostalgie d’un pays imaginaire, issu de rêves et de cauchemars, des illusions d’un peuple sans nom, et une réflexion féroce sur l’illusion du cinéma lui-même. Le sous-titre, que l’auteur avait donné au film, est la formule de tous les contes : IL ETAIT UNE FOIS … UN PAYS.
