" Et Fellini répondait: " Cher Joseph, je ne revois jamais mes films et quand un ami m'en parle parce qu'il en a vu un récemment, j'ai toujours un sursaut, comme si on découvrait soudain que je n'ai pas payé mes impôts, ou comme si j'apprenais que le mari d'une belle femme a tout découvert et me cherche. " Avec amusement et une allégresse malicieuse à brouiller les pistes, Fellini révèle les points mystérieux qui le lient à son travail de cinéaste... Tout de soi - rien de soi: le spectacle continue dans le refus de la limite que sont l'officialité, l'explication, la mise en mots. On retrouve à chaque ligne, dans cette évocation enlevée, les jeux troublés du maquillage, de la fiction, de l'illusion, de l'imagination. Faire un film n'est pas un livre qui informe, c'est un livre qui révèle.
