Paris-Palaces retrace l'histoire des établissements d'avant la première guerre qui, par leurs dimensions et la sophistication de leur décoration, cherchaient à rivaliser avec les théâtres. Mais l'exploitation de cette époque ne se réduit pas aux "Palaces" : ce livre s'attache à nous faire connaître également les petits établissements de quartier, le public qui les fréquente et le monde de leurs modestes exploitants si bien insérés dans la vie locale. Une importante iconographie contribue à rendre plus présente cette période mal connue de l'histoire du cinéma.
