Brian de Palma, 60 ans, est l'un des ces wonderboys qui, avec Coppola, Scorcese, Lucas et Spielberg, ont bouleversé le cinéma américian des trente dernières années. Cet immense metteur en scène a réalisé 25 longs-métrages, exerçant son talent dans des genres aussi différents que le thriller ("sœur s de sang", "Obsession", "Pulsions", "Blow Out", "Body Double"), le film d'action ("Scarface", "Les Incorruptibles", "L'Impasse", "Mission Impossible"), le fantastique ("Carrie", "Phantom of the paradise"), le film de guerre, la SF et la comédie. Brian de Palma est un cinéaste très discret, avare d'interviews et a fortiori de confidences sur son œuvre et sa vie. Ce livre, qui est donc en quelque sorte un exploit, paraît au cœur d'une bibliographie à peu près vierge sur le sujet. Les illustrations parmi lesquelles figurent de nombreuses photos intimes ou de tournage, fournies par Brian de Palma lui-même ou par son frère Bart, sont exceptionnelles.
