Michal Waszynski (1904-1963) a réalisé le chef-d'œuvre du cinéma yiddish, Le Dibbouk, en 1937. Mais sa biographie officielle est une imposture. Somptueux et mensonger, prince et juif errant, le voici vraiment tel que Samuel Blumenfeld nous le raconte. Comment un juif né en Volhynie, c'est-à-dire nulle part, a pu se faire passer pour un prince catholique et un aristocrate polonais ? Comment a-t-il échappé à la déportation ? Est-ce l'amour qui commande au mariage entre cet homosexuel raffiné et une comtesse romaine octogénaire qui lui lègue sa fortune ? A-t-il vraiment lancé Audrey Hepburn, secondé Orson Welles sur le tournage d'Othello, assisté Joseph Mankiewicz sur La Comtesse aux pieds nus ? Dans l'Espagne franquiste, ce prince d'opérette qui possède une Rolls aux poignées en or massif va créer le plus grand studio d'Europe. Détournant des sommes considérables, exploitant des scénaristes black-listés à Hollywood, utilisant la propagande chrétienne comme déguisement de ses folies, il produit entre autres Le Cid avec Charlton Heston ou reconstruit la Cité interdite pour Les 55 jours de Pékin. Le Prince imaginaire, c'est le dernier Nabab et Zélig en même temps.
