Avant d’être fusillé le 6 février 1945, Robert Brasillach a laissé, malgré sa courte vie, une œuvre d’un rare éclectisme et d’un talent inouï. Aussi à l’aise dans le roman, la critique littéraire et cinématographique, le théâtre que dans la politique ou la poésie, il incarnait un humanisme aujourd’hui bien disparu.
Dès l’âge de dix-huit ans, il amorçait une longue carrière de cinéphile et de critique du septième art, dans La Tribune de l’Yonne sous la signature de Jacques Tournebroche (pseudonyme emprunté à Anatole France). Suivirent Le Coq catalan, La Revue universelle, Gringoire, La Chronique de Paris, L’Appel, La Gerbe, L’Echo de la France, mais quasiment jamais Je suis partout où la critique cinématographique était assurée par son ami Lucien Rebatet (alias François Vinneuil).
Le présent volume rassemble les articles de cinéma que Robert Brasillach a publiés dans ces divers organes de presse de 1927 au 12 juillet 1944. Il témoigne de sa vision, de sa tendresse et de ce fameux “plaisir du cinéma”, et complète ainsi la fabuleuse Histoire du cinéma coécrite avec son beau-frère Maurice Bardèche.
