Barry Gifford est un auteur connu en France de tous les amateurs de romans noirs. Sa notoriété est plus grande encore depuis que certains de ses héros sont devenus des personnages de cinéma, à l'instar de Sailor, Lula ou Pedrita Durango. Ces chroniques de cinéma, pour la plupart écrites pour un magazine de San Francisco, Mystery Scene, sont autant de récits noirs d'une Amérique qu'il connaît bien, et qui est aussi celle de ses propres fictions. À tel point que son écriture glisse parfois sans transition de l'anecdote biographique à la scène de film, à tel point que les copains de son quartier de Chicago, les affranchis, peuvent à tout instant se transformer en gangsters d'Anthony Mann.
