Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Sailor et Lula, le film et la série Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, Une histoire vraie, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire : David Lynch a marqué de son génie le panorama contemporain de la création cinématographique et télévisuelle. Pendant longtemps, toutefois, son œuvre a suscité sinon le scandale, du moins la perplexité. Maintenant devenu artiste consacré par le public et la critique, le réalisateur n'a pas pour autant renoncé au désir du renouvellement et de l'expérimentation, continuant de placer la définition des cinémas - du cinéma - au centre de son projet créatif. Par une étude thématique et formelle ainsi qu'une " mise en situation " culturelle, esthétique et philosophique de l'œuvre, cet essai entend baliser l'écart au chemin coutumier qui caractérise la pratique de l'auteur.

Chercheur associé à l'université Paris VII. Jean Foubert est un spécialiste du cinéma américain dont les articles consacrés à David Lunch ont notamment paru dans la revue Positif. Il a écrit cet ouvrage à l'invitation du département d'études cinématographiques et de rhétorique de l'université de Berkeley.
