De ses courts-métrages expérimentaux des années 1960 à ses longs-métrages comme Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet ou encore Mulholland Drive - sans oublier la cultissime série Twin Peaks - David Lynch a repoussé les limites de la narration. Riche en illustrations, cet ouvrage est autant un portrait de ce "tsar du bizarre" qu'une rétrospective de son travail où film noir, road movie, histoires d'amour, étrangetés et mystères se conjuguent pour donner naissance à des œuvres uniques et inoubliables. Ponctué d'interviews et d'analyses de sa carrière, ce recueil permet de lever le voile, autant que faire se peut, sur l'une des énigmes du cinéma mondial. Ian Nathan est un spécialiste du cinéma. Ancien rédacteur-en-chef du magazine Empire, il contribue régulièrement aux Cahiers du Cinéma, The Times ou encore The Independant.
