Connu aujourd'hui comme cinéaste (il a travaillé avec Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, John Cassavetes, Jean Seberg et ses plus beaux films s'appellent l'Aventurier du Rio Grande et la Flamme pourpre), Robert Parrish a vécu son enfance à Hollywood, au temps de Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin et Rudolph Valentino. Acteur enfant et adolescent dans les films de Raoul Walsh, Allan Dwan et Cecil B. de Mille, il passe ensuite de l'autre côté de la caméra et devient monteur pour John Ford, son maître, Robert Rossen et Max Ophuls, avant de passer à la mise en scène.
Témoin privilégié - ses Mémoires ont été salués comme un des meilleurs livres consacrés à Hollywood -, Robert Parrish est aussi un formidable conteur que Bertrand Tavernier, dans sa préface, n'hésite pas à comparer à Mark Twain.
