Un film qui dépeint des personnages ou des événements historiques, un film qui ressuscite le passé en l'habillant ou en le déguisant, en le mettant en images et en mouvement. Mais qu'en est-il de histoire récente ? Jean-Loup Bourget a choisi de s'arrêter au seuil du Xxe siècle, quand la frontière entre la réalité et la fiction se fait trop précise. Car l'histoire au cinéma est proche de la légende et du mythe, même s'il est vrai que le merveilleux et la fantaisie décorative sont tempérés, chez les plus grands cinéastes, par un souci d'exactitude réaliste.
