La soixantaine sportive, Ben, directeur d'un club de gym new-yorkais, a courageusement surmonté son veuvage, mais il lui arrive encore, par nostalgie, d'aller seul dans des cinémas de quartier. On donnait ce soir-là " Le dernier tango à Paris " et ce fut la rencontre avec Ellen, une jeune documentaliste médicale mal remise d'une déception amoureuse. Curieusement, ce film sulfureux traduisait leurs angoisses communes. A deux, on chasse plus facilement son désarroi intérieur. Celui de Ben se nomme solitude. La hantise d'Ellen porte le visage de l'homme qui l'a trahie, un chirurgien renommé dont elle soupçonne les activités criminelles. Leur histoire débute comme une romance hollywoodienne. Elle se poursuit dans un climat de suspense ténébreux et haletant.
