Faire rire. Tel est avant tout le but du cinéma burlesque. Ce livre entreprend la généalogie d'un genre comique protéiforme qui part de la littérature, passe par les arts de la scène et du cirque, se rencontre dans les arts picturaux et trouve son âge d'or (pour reprendre l'expression de James Agee) dans les figures de la grande "cène" burlesque hollywoodienne. C'est cette folie paradoxalement pleine de sens qui donne au geste burlesque toute sa puissance, toute sa force politique - pour rire, mais pas seulement.
