Marlon Brando a écrit que, s'il n'avait pas réussi en tant qu'acteur, il serait devenu un criminel, un escroc, plus précisément. Il faut le prendre au mot. Beaucoup se plaignent de ce que Brando, le plus grand acteur de sa génération, a gâché sa vie dans des révoltes futiles, et qu'il n'a laissé, par rapport à ce que son talent semblait promettre, que de trop rares chefs-d'œuvre derrière lui; mais si l'on tient compte de cette confession sincère, de ce penchant criminel, on peut déjà se satisfaire du peu qu'il nous a laissé. L'acteur qui a crevé l'écran dans Un tramway nommé Désir, L'Équipée sauvage, Sur les quais, Le Parrain, Apocalypse now ou Le Dernier Tango à Paris n'a aucune excuse à présenter à la postérité.
