" De tous les acteurs que j'ai rencontrés, disait Elia Kazan, Marlon Brando est celui qui approchait le plus le génie. Il y avait en lui quelque chose de miraculeux. " De l'Actor's Studio à Tahiti où il acheta un atoll, la vie et l'œuvre de Brando se mêlent en un véritable tourbillon où se croisent les triomphes (les Oscars) et les drames personnels. Sa carrière lui a fait rencontrer certains des plus remarquables cinéastes hollywoodiens, Elia Kazan, Francis Ford Coppola, John Huston, Joseph L. Mankiewicz et - plus curieusement - Charlie Chaplin, dont il joua le dernier film. Son goût pour les maquillages lui permit d'interpréter avec la même perfection un paysan japonais, Napoléon Bonaparte, Marc Antoine et Torquemada. Au début des années 1970, il était de bon ton de déclarer fini - un peu trop tôt - le prestigieux comédien d'Un tramway nommé Désir et de Sur les quais. En deux films, Brando rappela qu'il restait le plus grand, capable de personnifier Don Vito Corleone, dans Le Parrain, et Paul, l'Américain déchu du Dernier Tango à Paris. Illustré de photos rares et de témoignages peu connus, cet ouvrage, qui s'attache tout autant à la vie qu'aux films, permet de retrouver un acteur et un homme hors du commun.
