Plus de quarante ans après avoir abandonné le cinéma, Greta Garbo est tout aussi célèbre qu'à l'époque de sa plus grande gloire. La télévision et les salles de cinéma diffusent ses films. À chaque fois, le public semble redécouvrir celle qui était en 1936 la femme la mieux payée des États-Unis et qu'on avait surnommée « la Divine ».
À partir d'une importante iconographie et d'une somme considérable d'informations, ce livre est à la fois une réflexion sur un fabuleux mythe cinématographique et la découverte d'éléments inédits (comme des extraits de scénario de « The Divine Woman », le film de Garbo totalement disparu).
Dirigée par certains des plus grands cinéastes hollywoodiens – George Cukor, Ernst Lubitsch, Rouben Mamoulian... – Greta Garbo a bénéficié de la splendeur esthétique de la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer qui a produit tous ses films américains. Elle éclate dans ces photos arrachées au temps et qui sont de véritables œuvres d'art.
