En 1952, Charlie Chaplin et sa famille embarquent de New York sur le Queen Elizabeth, direction l'Angleterre. Visé par la chasse aux sorcières maccarthyste, Charlie Chaplin refuse de collaborer avec le gouvernement américain et de dénoncer les artistes qui sympathisent avec le communisme. Une jeune journaliste l'a suivi sur le paquebot et devient le témoin des douleurs de cet exil, qui sera définitif. Le dossier qui suit le récit s'attache à différencier la délation issue de la haine de la dénonciation nécessaire des injustices.
