Un homme à l'enfance difficile dans les quartiers miséreux de Londres et qui a appris très tôt à se battre pour obtenir ce qu'il veut. Un homme qui a enchanté le monde entier mais qui a été malmené par l'Amérique de l'après-guerre lui reprochant ses sympathies politiques. Au point qu'il devra s'exiler en Europe. C'est cette histoire fascinante que l'auteur raconte dans cette biographie, notamment grâce à des entretiens avec la famille et les proches de Chaplin.
